Jesus shared a very motivating truth with His novice disciples in Acts 1:8: But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth (NKJV).
We have the habit of reading it, ... you shall be witnesses for Me..., rather than witnesses to Me.... There just may be a world of difference here. A person may share a religious testimony, using all the proper scriptures and in the right order. That person, touched and taught by God, may come to true faith in Christ. But what I believe Jesus was saying was, You shall so come to experience Me that you will not be able to contain yourself. You will be constantly seeking every opportunity to tell others about Meand what I have done and am doing in your life. Such a witness will be used by the Holy Spirit to draw all people to Me!
I know a man whose life illustrates this principle. John Beckett is the CEO of R. W. Beckett Corporation in Ohio. He is a well- respected and much-loved businessman. He is also a great on mission Christian and a sincere man of prayer. He looks for every opportunity to tell others about Jesus.
One morning he invited employees from several of his production plants to come for a breakfast at one of the facilities. He invited me to bring a message to his employees, and he prayed that some might come to experience Christ for the first time in their lives. We had a wonderful breakfast, and many employees and their spouses came.
Immediately, Barb, who had worked there for three years, began to tell others, I really got a lot out of this. It really touched my life. Three weeks later she came by Johns office and repeated this to him. He was, as always, very sensitive to the working of the Lord. He sensed this was her way of saying, I was touched. I wish I knew more. John asked her if she wanted to hear more. She did! He called his assistant, Pam, into the office and asked her to share her testimony of how Christ had changed her life. It deeply moved Barb. John then simply said, Barb, would you like to receive Jesus into your life and know Him as Pam and I do? She said, Oh yes, I would! There, in Johns workplace, Barb became a believer in Jesus, repenting of her sin and trusting Jesus to save her. Her life has been radically changed. She later shared, Three years ago when I came to work here, I sensed that something was going to happen that would change my life. And God did.
Witnessing is not difficult when you have something real, personal and exciting to share, especially about what Jesus is doing right now in your life. You are a witness to Him. In other words, you can tell others the story of Jesus in your life, how He changed you.
Maybe the reason many Christians do not share freely with others is that they arent in a real and vital relationship with the Living Christ. When Jesus is real in the morning, you cant help but be a witness to Him all during the day.
I had the privilege recently to attend a White House briefing. One key senator shared before the group of about 140 attendees how Experiencing God had so radically changed his life, his marriage and his home. Then he added, so simply, This change in my life is so real and exciting, I want others to know Christ this way too! Henry, you need to know that Im now teaching Experiencing God to a group of senators every week, and their lives are changing just like mine has!
Another time I shared with a group of police officers in Fort Worth, Texas, from my book, The Man God Uses. One of the officers lives was so changed he just had to share Him. That week he led his patrol partner to the Lord. This was the first person he had ever shared with and led to Jesus. You can do this too, when Jesus is so real in you that you just have to share about Him.
I share this good news for modern menChrist, our Lord, wants to be so real and vital in our daily lives that there will be an exciting overflow into the lives of everyone we meet. Our Lord is saying to each of us, Stay close to Me, and I will bring such a touch of My presence in you, others will want to know and experience Me just like you do!
