  • road trip: pittsburg, pa

Spend six days in the only place to be voted America’s most livable city, twice. Come visit Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and bring the kids!

Nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains where the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers converge, Pittsburgh is known for its scenic landscape and world-class sports teams as well as its historic and cultural attractions. It’s a great place to spend a few days with the family. But, it’s an even better place to spend a few days sharing the love of Christ as part of a Families on Mission project.

Families on Mission (FOM) is a pre-packaged, week-long family missions opportunity that allows mom, dad, and grandparents to model an on mission lifestyle for their children and grandchildren. Parents and grandparents have the unique privilege to be “hands on” as they guide their family through devotions, missions awareness, missions projects, worship, family small-group discussions, and interaction with missionaries and residents of the community.

The suburbs of Pittsburgh are a ripe mission field with 3 million people living in the nine counties that make up the Baptist Association of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Two million of those are unchurched and the association has only 60 churches to reach them—that’s one church for every 61,225 people. As a result the BASWP has put a major emphasis on church planting.

Families are invited to work alongside these new churches to minister to the people of greater Pittsburgh through Vacation Bible School, Backyard Bible Clubs, and sports camps. Other opportunities include servant evangelism, conducting surveys, and participating in community block parties.

“This experience will change your life,” says Shelley Deane from Ontario, Canada, who took part in an FOM project last year. “It was wonderful to work side-by-side with my daughter to do God’s work.” Shelley and her daughter, Julia, plan to participate again this year.

     Project Details:
Families will partner with the North American Mission Board and the Baptist Association of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Two opportunities are available to serve in Pittsburgh this summer—June 14-19 and June 21-26.

Families will stay in a local hotel close to their ministry site where breakfast will be provided. Sack lunches will be provided at the ministry site and a local church will host families for dinner as well as worship and Bible study times.

The cost of the trip is $225 per person and all children must be five years old and have completed kindergarten to participate.
