Missionaries often say the most powerful way to assist them is to pray. As
believers pray, the Holy Spirit comforts and encourages, while providing vision
and direction for the journey ahead. Even though most of us realize the
importance of praying for our missionaries, we sometimes fall into the habit of
repeating the same requests each time we pray. We hope these thoughts will
point you to the scriptures and give you spiritual insight in lifting up our
missionaries and their families throughout the year.
Pray that God will set our missionaries apart through the anointing of the
Holy Spirit, empowering them to minister to those held captive by sin.
John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit
and with power, and how He went about doing good and curing all who were under
the tyranny of the Devil, because God was with Him (Acts 10:38).
Ask God to give missionaries boldness to honor Christ even in dangerous
My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about
anything, but that now as always, with all boldness, Christ will be highly
honored in my body, whether by life or by death (Philippians 1:20).
Pray that our missionaries will be filled with the same compassion Jesus had
for unbelievers and teach about the Savior who can offer grace, peace and
direction in a chaotic world.
So as He stepped ashore, He saw a huge crowd and had compassion on them,
because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then He began to teach them
many things (Mark 6:34).
Ask God to clear missionaries’ minds of daily cares and worries so they can
discern His will for their lives and ministries.
Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of
your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will
of God (Romans 12:2).
Pray that, even though they are tested, our missionaries will endure through
trials having complete faith in Christ.
Knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. But
endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete,
lacking nothing (James 1:3-4).
Ask God to strengthen the missionaries’ faith. Pray that they will have
complete trust in Jesus to accomplish the work He has called them to
I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me (Philippians
Pray that God will continually extend His grace to the missionaries, giving
them the knowledge and power to reach the world for Christ.
We have received grace and apostleship through Him to bring about the
obedience of faith among all the nations, on behalf of his name (Romans
Jesus exhibited humility throughout his life, telling his disciples that He
came not to be served but to serve. Pray that our missionaries would serve in
this same spirit of humility, considering the needs of those they serve as more
important than their own ego and material gain.
Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as
more important than yourselves (Philippians 2:3).
Ask God to give the missionaries a clear view into hearts and lives of the
people they minister to, so they will have a greater ability to exhibit God’s
I want their hearts to be encouraged and joined together in love, so
that they may have all the riches of assured understanding, and have the
knowledge of God’s mystery—Christ (Colossians 2:2).
Pray that the missionaries will be filled with awe-inspiring joy that can
only come through the power of the Holy Spirit.
For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness,
peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).
Pray that as our missionaries continually seek greater knowledge of God, He
will reveal Himself to them in a personal and intimate way.
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would
give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him (Ephesians
Ask God to remind the missionaries that great faith without great love can
If I have all faith so that I can move mountains but do not have love, I
am nothing (1 Corinthians 13:2b).
Pray that the missionaries’ ministries will be characterized by miracles
both in their lives and in the lives of those they serve.
And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them
and confirming the Word by the accompanying signs (Mark 16:20).
Pray that God would supply all of our missionaries’ spiritual, physical and
And my God will supply all of your needs according to His riches in
glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).
Ask God to give the missionaries a spirit of optimism. Although their work
is discouraging at times, pray that the Holy Spirit will fill them with joy and

Pray that the missionaries will be patient with those they are teaching.
Pray that they would continue to correct and encourage even when it seems like
no progress is being made.
Proclaim the message; persist in it whether convenient or not; rebuke,

(2 Timothy 4:2).
Pray that our missionaries will reserve quality time away from their
ministries to spend with their families.

his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever

Now the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ
Jesus, will personally restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after
you have suffered a little (1 Peter 5:10).
Thank God for missionaries who are willing to sacrifice the material
comforts of life to bring people to the Savior.
No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life
for his friends (John 15:13).
Pray that our missionaries will always rely on God’s timing, trusting Him to
open the doors for them to walk through.
For we are His making, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God
prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them (Ephesians
Pray that our missionaries would have an urgent desire to share Christ.
Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God concerning them is for
their salvation (Romans 10:1)!
Ask God to put his vision into the hearts of the missionaries, so they can

Then He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the
whole creation (Mark 15:16).
Ask God to give our missionaries a spirit of willingness to diligently plan
and carry out His vision.
Do not lack diligence; be fervent in spirit; serve the Lord (Romans
Pray that our missionaries will strive for excellence in serving Christ,
presenting their lives as an example of light into a dark world.
Just one thing: live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of
Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you
that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, working side by side
for the faith of the gospel (Philippians 1:27).
Pray that the missionaries would yield themselves completely to the will of
My Father! If it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I
will, but as You will (Matthew 26:39).
Excitement is contagious! Pray that the missionaries’ zeal would stir up
other Christians to share their faith.
For I know your eagerness, and I brag about you to the Macedonians:
“Achaia has been prepared since last year,” and your zeal has stirred up most
of them (2 Corinthians 9:2).
