Despite the fact that membership in the Mormon church is growing, some Mormons are leaving their faith for the true gospel of Jesus Christ.

Consider the following advice the next time you have an opportunity to talk with a Mormon about his or her faith.

  • Be prepared with a clear understanding of your faith and of the Bible.

  • Have a basic knowledge of Mormon doctrines. Keep in mind that most Mormon doctrine is not found in the Book of Mormon but in the Mormon Doctrine of Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price.

  • Keep the initiative in the encounter. If the Mormon raises objections or wants to examine other "biblical" texts, ask him or her to make note of them for later discussion.

  • Use the King James Version of the Bible. It is the official version for the LDS church. Most Mormons are unaware that Joseph Smith translated his own "inspired version" of the Bible, in which he made more than 600 changes.

  • Give a strong, positive testimony of your salvation experience.

  • Present the gospel. Discuss Luke 18:9-14.

  • Trust the Holy Spirit to lead you. Remember: it is your responsibility to give a witness for Jesus Christ and to rely on the Holy Spirit for results.

  • Define your terms clearly. Mormons often use similar terms but give them different meanings.

  • Be patient. Seldom is a Mormon won to Christ with one encounter.
