Here Am I, Send Me—Songs of Evangelism
Sparrow Records
1998

Think of the term on mission Christian as it concerns the Christian music industry, and for those who’ve followed the industry for a while, the name Keith Green springs to mind. Green was the premiere music evangelist of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and his music pulled no punches at offering mercy to those who needed it or a kick in the pants to those who needed something more direct.

Sparrow Records has repackaged Green’s music into a series of four new releases. Arranged thematically, the series focuses on songs of testimony, worship, devotion and evangelism.

It’s in the songs of evangelism that Keith Green is at his best. Featuring such songs as “Here Am I, Send Me,” “Asleep in the Light,” “Open Your Eyes,” “How Can They Live Without Jesus” and “Go to the Hungry Ones,” the project speaks to both Christians and non-Christians. Non-Christians will find a no-holds-barred gospel message that few in Christian music can equal. But Green also accomplishes the crucial step of encouraging Christians to get actively involved and evangelize on a consistent basis.

Take for example the lyrics from “Jesus Commands Us to Go”:

Jesus commands us to go
But we go the other way
So He carries the burden alone
While His children are busy at play

If you’re looking for music that will give you a light, joyful, carefree feeling inside, Here Am I, Send Me is not what you’re looking for. But, if you want to find music that will hold you accountable for doing your part to tell the world around you about Jesus Christ, there’s no better place to start.
